To watch them gleefully jump up and down for joy on the spot, at world record speed is enough to put a smile on any ones face let alone mom and dads. Nonetheless, it is difficult to apply face paint while the kid is in mid air, so be a little stern and tell them if they want to be the best monster (scary ghoul, screeching witch, wailing banshee, squealing bat, Dracula or black cat) in town trick or treating then they will have to stand still. Good luck, although kids will want to be the scariest monster they tend to forget your warning after about a minute, and back on the imaginary trampoline they go.

Tip: If the Halloween costume needs altering, do not do it while the child is wearing his or her scary Halloween costume if using a needle and cotton.

Are you dressing your child as a ghoul or witch to go trick or treating, or for a Halloween party you have planned for Halloween night, or because the child has an invite to a friends house. Either of the options will include Halloween party food having to be arranged. If you lay on a spread of eats the kids love and find attractive then nothing will go to waste. To set the whole Halloween theme alight...place a couple of decorated pumpkins around the room. When preparing and arranging the party, consider the childrens safety. Make sure candles and electric sockets your using meet with safety requirements. For instance: The candles are not near curtains or within childrens reach, and electrical wiring taped down to avoid trips or falls.

Pumpkins can be picked up for pennies late in the evening when the shop keeper believes the mad rush for pumpkins is over.

If a lighted pumpkin is planned for the table centrepiece then make sure the lid remains on top and the pumpkin placed in the middle of the table out of reach. Do not have food around the pumpkin so the kids hands do not come in contact with the pumpkin. When you decorate the pumpkin make the mouth of your creation saddened so the kids cannot put their finger in and touch the flame.
To keep their Halloween costumes clean cut a black sheet into squares' and glue edges neatly for napkins. On each napkin glue their name in a spooky font, or Halloween symbol.

Little Witches

Ingredients:

2 egg whites

115oz (4oz) caster sugar

8 ice cream cones (double up if there are more kids)

50g melted chocolate

Chocolate vermicelli

Tube Smarties

Silver or gold balls

Liquorice strips

White ice cream

Method:

Preheat oven to 110C/225F/gas mark 4. Whisk 2 egg whites until stiff and dry, add 115g (4oz) caster sugar1tbsp at a time, and mix again until the mixture is thick. Put 8 heaps of meringue on a baking sheet lined with non-stick paper and bake for 2 hours. Remove and cool. Dip the ends of the wafer cones in melted chocolate and chocolate vermicelli. Leave and let dry. Decorate the cones and meringues with Smarties (hat) silver/gold balls (eyes) and liquorice strips for straggly hair...attach with melted chocolate. Use scoops of ice cream to stick the hats to the faces.

Avoid risky meals that contain something a child could choke on, or hazardous causing an allergic reaction (nuts) Speak to the parents whose child is attending the party and ask what yummy food they can, or cannot eat.

Every Halloween party has toffee apples, and if they do not then they should. Most Halloween treats consist of sugary ingredients, so watch out for the greedy child wanting seconds. Print out an awareness pamphlet for each child, telling them about the "ghoul-den" rules on how all Halloween freaks clean their teeth. The kids will love to follow in the footsteps of their monster idols, and will do the same. Explain how the monsters know being gummy prevents them eating food that is yummy.

Toffee Apples

Ingredients:

5 medium-sized dessert apples (depending on how many guests)

450g soft caramel sweets

2 tbsp water

Method:

Wash and dry the apples, and stick a wooden skewer through the stem end. Slowly heat the caramel sweets in a double boiler or over a bain Marie until melted and smooth. Dip the apples in the toffee and twist until completely coated in the caramel/treacle. Place on greaseproof paper upright and sit in the fridge till set

Ice-cream Creepy Crawlies

Ingredients:

Chocolate ice cream

Black licorice sticks

Currants

Method:

Put a scoop of chocolate ice cream in the middle of a bowl. Poke 8 pieces of black licorice along the side of the scoop to make the legs. Add two currants for the eyes.

Eyeball Eggs

Ingredients:

Hard boiled eggs (halved)

Cream cheese

Stuffed olives

Tomato ketchup

Method:

Scoop egg yolks out. Mash the yolks in a bowl and add some cream cheese. Fill the empty egg middles with the yolk/cheese mix and add an olive for the eye ball. Use cocktail sticks to draw lines on the whites so they appear blood shot.

Your Halloween party food needs to include the messy

Green Slime

Make a lime jelly and when its set mash it up. Decorate with gummy wriggly worms, or jelly slithery snakes.

The Mud Recipe below will go down a treat with all the kids

Melt a 200g bar of milk chocolate over a pot of boiling water Allow to cool, and then add some finely grated orange zest, 1 tbsp fresh orange juice, and 2 x 500g tubs of natural fat-free/low fat fromage frais. Blend and pour into a bowl. Chill in the fridge before serving. Make it more exciting by asking the children to wash their hands, and then allow them to eat it with their fingers for more fun

Dracula Burgers

Serve a beef burger, tuna burger or veggie burger in a bun with lashings of vampire blood (tomato sauce.) Check with the childrens parents about what foods they are allowed to eat. Some children are picky at meal times, but this is different to the child that may have special needs.

Spooky Lemonade

1 cup water

1 cup granulated/ or caster sugar

Juice from 4-6 lemons

4 cups sparkling water

Make the syrup a couple of hours in advance. Its a good idea to prepare Halloween party foods while the children are in bed so your baked goodies remain a surprise, hence no need to be tapping the hand attached to those inquisitive fingers sneakily dipping in your mixes.
Mix 1 cup of water - and 1 cup sugar in small pot and bring to a boil, stirring often, until the sugar dissolves. Allow to cool. Squeeze the lemon juice in and stir into the syrup. Put into a large jug and add 4 cups of chilled sparkling water, mix and serve.

Witches Blood

500ml pomegranate or cranberry juice

100 ml blackcurrant squash

500 ml sparkling water

Mix ingredients together in a jug, and serve

Let's face it - Halloween is not great for the environment with all of those little packages, wrappers, costume bags, face paints, etc. It is not great for our waist lines or teeth either. Since I am always looking for ways to improve things, I feel I have stumbled upon a great solution to make Halloween trick or treat bags safer. How? Give out Halloween toys instead of candy.

What are Halloween toys? There are a number of items that you can buy for around the same cost as candy. My favorites are ones that will be used and reused often. Pencils decorated with pumpkins, ghosts, ghouls and witches make a fun reminder of Halloween that kids can use at school or at home. Erasers and pencil toppers also come in a variety of fun shapes and sizes. Since kids need these items anyways, why not give them instead of candy?

There are also items for recess or play, like: bouncy balls that look like eyeballs; squishy balls; soft spiked balls and toy tops. There are also keepsakes, like rings; necklaces; stuffed toys; glow-in-the-dark-teeth and light-up pins. There are practical items such as mini flashlights; socks; reflective necklaces and coffee mugs - although these will usually cost around $1 each. Craft items are also fun and useful and can include wood shapes; markers; foam kits; stampers and glitter glue.

As always, look for items that are made from recycled materials.

Kids love to get toys and receiving them as Halloween treats helps to cut down on the amount of candy and sugar they eat. Halloween toys are also great for schools, clubs and parties. Unlike candy, toys do not cause obesity, tooth decay or allergic reactions. Toys are harder to tamper with, so kids are safer. Best of all, you do not have to worry about over-buying. If you have toys left over, simply store them for next year. You can't do that with candy!

Whether you're having a Halloween party or just trying to celebrate the occasion yourself, Halloween should be scary and fun even when it comes to eating. In any and every party, what there is to eat, is usually the main discussion of the night during and after the party and this is why it's one of the most important things.

Here are a few Halloween Recipes to die for.

There are plenty of kinds of Halloween recipes you can make ranging from cakes, to dips or even just small simple but still scary snacks. One of the Halloween recipes that kids can't seem to get enough of are Pumpkin pasties.

The ingredients for Pumpkin Pasties are as follows:
One pound of canned pumpkin
Two slightly beaten eggs
Half a teaspoon of salt
Half a teaspoon of ginger
Half a teaspoon of cloves
One teaspoon of cinnamon
One and two-third cups of milk
Three fourths a cup of sugar
Half a teaspoon of allspice
Nine ounce pie crust pastry

Roll the pastry crust thin and cut into circles approximately 4 inches in diameter. Put a spoonful of filling near the center. Fold over the crust into a half-circle and firmly crimp the edges closed. Don't forget to add vent slits or fork holes in the top before placing on a baking sheet.

Bake Pasties at 400 degrees F until crust is a light golden brown, which is usually about 10 minutes.

Halloween Cookie Pizza Recipe

Ingredients:
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (Pillsbury)
3 Tbsp Peanut Butter
1 Tub Vanilla cake frosting
1 Package Miniature Chocolate Chips

Instructions: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Cut the chocolate chip cookie dough into ¼ -inch-thick slices. Place the slices on the bottom of a 12 inch greased foil-lined pan. Using floured fingers, press slices to form the cookie dough pizza crust. Place crust in oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Once the cookie dough pizza crust has cooled, carefully remove foil from crust and place on serving platter. Spread peanut butter evenly over the crust and sprinkle candy corn and chocolate chips over the entire top. Drizzle ¼ cup of melted frosting over the cookie pizza. Cut into wedges and serve.

Black Jello Halloween Party Recipe

Ingredients:
1 6 ounce package grape Jello
2 cups purple grape juice, chilled
1 cup water
1 small carrot, shredded
4 large marshmallows
1 16 ounces can unsweetened pineapple tidbits, drained
1 16 ounces can light peach slices, drained
2 cups green seedless grapes, washed
1 cup ice cubes

Instructions: While pineapple bits and peach slices are draining, dissolve Jello in 1 cup of boiling water. When the Jello is completely dissolved, add chilled grape juice and 1 cup of ice cubes. Stir until all ice cubes are dissolved. Add shredded carrot to the Jello. Cut the marshmallows into small pieces and add along with cut up peaches and pineapple tidbits. Leave grapes whole for eyeballs. Chill and then stir as it thickens to evenly distribute the fruit.

Blood Clot Punch Recipe for Halloween

Ingredients:
1 2-liter bottle of Black Cherry soda
1 2-liter bottle of Fruit Punch soda
1 can frozen strawberries
1 bag of gummy worms

Instructions: Pour both bottles of soda into a punch bowl. Put the can of frozen strawberries in the soda to melt. Stir occasionally as the strawberries melt. Just before serving, stir in the bag of gummy worms. You can also fill a rubber glove with water and freeze. Before you place the bowl of punch on the table, remove the rubber glove and put the frozen hand in the punch bowl to keep it cold.

Inflate Spider Ring Toss Game

1. Bobbing for Apples - This is a Halloween game that goes back hundreds of years. Place apples with stems in a large tub or kettle with water. They must remove an apple only using their teeth. Alternatively, you can tie 13 apples to strings and hang them from a tree. Each child must try to bite an apple while blindfolded.

2. Candy Hunt - Similar to an egg hunt, wrap little packages of candy corn in netting or use other candy and hide them for the children to find.

3. Sardines - This is a variation of hide and seek but with a twist. One person is "it" and hides and the others go searching. When someone finds the "it," rather than let on where they are, they hide with them. Soon you have six or more children hiding with "it." The last one to find "it" becomes "it" the next time.

4. Wrap the Mummy - This is a race game. Divide the children up in pairs. One in each pair is "the mummy," and they must stand still. The race is for their partner to wrap them in a roll of toilet paper before anyone else.

5. Spider Web - You will need lengths of black yarn and a plastic or toy spider and a small prize for each child. To set up, tie one end of the yarn to a prize and hide the prize, then walk around the room twisting the yarn around furniture. Cut the yarn and attach a spider to the other end within sight in the middle of the room. Repeat with the other prizes. Each child finds a spider and then follows it to a prize.

6. Witch Race - You will need at least two buckets and two brooms. Each player in the race must put one foot in the bucket and hold onto it with one hand, and carry a broom in the other hand.

7. Apple Race - Kids must race on all fours while pushing apples with their noses.

8. Taboo - One player is the questioner and chooses a letter of the alphabet that can’t be used by the players. The questioner then asks the first player a question, and they have to answer in a sentence without using that letter. If they do, they are out of the game and the turn passes. The last person in the game is the questioner in the next round.

9. Witch on a Broom - This is a memory game. The first player begins by saying, "I’m a witch on a broom and I’m taking a _______," and they fill in the blank with whatever they like. The second person in the circle starts out, "I’m a witch on a broom and I’m taking a _____ and a _____," and then they must name what the first player said and then add one of their own. The third person starts out the same and must name what the first players said in order, and so on. As more things are added, players start making mistakes. The last person in the game without error, wins.

10. Frankenstein - For this you will need for each child a stiff card or foam board, scissors, and glue, and you will also need magazines. Have the kids cut out separate heads, torsos, arms, and legs and glue them onto the cards... the funnier the better.

11. Witch’s Hat (or Wizard’s Hat if you have Harry Potter fans) - You will need one stiff and pointy hat, and rings to toss over it.

12. Zombie - Divide players into pairs. Each pair must hold hands and use their free hands (one each) to tie a shoe.

13. Pass the Pumpkin - You will need small pumpkins or squash, and large soup spoons. Form two teams for relay racing.

Scars: One of the easiest and safest ways to make scars is to use colored tissue paper and corn syrup, yep you read it right corn syrup. Choose a color of tissue paper that matches the makeup color as closely as possible. The corn syrup will be sticky this will allow it to stick to your skin, allow it to dry completely then apply makeup. If you are looking for more realistic scars. Use a combination of toilet tissue and liquid latex, layer them at least 2 layers for strength. Then work to the desired shape you want your scar to be, and apply makeup.

Warts: (warning keep away from eyes) use black, or white pepper corns. Place on the nose using corn syrup, or eyelash glue. You can even use hairs from paint brush to create hairy warts for that extra gross look. Lightly paint around the area to blend with rest of makeup or apply face powder to soften the look.

Scabs: Can be one of the easiest, but most effective parts of your costume. You will need a few things before you get started. Some toilet tissue (plys separated), liquid latex and your choice of paint and makeup. Clean the area that you want to apply, and make sure there is no hair present (it will stick to hair) apply a small thin coat of Liquid Latex. Then apply 1 ply of the toilet tissue, and another thin layer of latex. Now pull up and cut the latex as needed, this will create the effect of skin pulled away. Apply darker makeup to the center and alternate with red's and blue's around the outside of the cap. You can even apply a little fake blood to increase the effect.

Protect you makeup by putting some plain talc powder or baby powder in an old sock, and pat on to the make up. This will help cure the makeup and help prevent it from running or blending together, making your work last all through the night.

Your face will need to be white. Vampires have pale faces, so your Halloween makeup will need to be colorless. (After all, vampires never even get a glimpse of the sun, right?) You will need to acquire the palest shade of foundation you can. If your local pharmacy does not have a shade light enough, you can get it at a costume or theater shop. For a Gothic look, a very light makeup on your face will give this result. You apply this makeup on your entire face and right down to your neckline. Put the make up on any section of your upper body that is showing. By applying powder to your face you will seal in your pale face color. Sprinkle some baby powder to make your ghoulish look last.

Make your vampire eyes. The next thing to do to look like a vampire for Halloween is the eyes. Your eye needs to be dark and sinister looking. The important makeup pieces are dark shadow and dark eyeliner. Put liner inside of your eye on both the top and bottom lid. Draw the eyeliner from one corner of your eye to the other. A very dark eyeshadow (brown, gray, black should follow. Go right around your eyes, making for a dramatic effect. Vampire-inspired contact lenses create a convincing look for Halloween. They have a tiny black hole in the center so your pupils look very small, and give you a deathly look. It is the perfect thing to add to your makeup.

Top it off with some lip color. Lips on vampires are very red. Apply a few coats of the reddest lipstick you can find to your lips. Rub it around so that your lips will absorb the stain. Mix the ingredients together to create the fake blood. Condensed milk can be added to make it less transparent and more like real blood. The Corn Syrup Blood is extremely sticky and can stain clothes and skin. Use warm water for your skin and stain remover for your clothes.

Be sure to plan ahead. Planning is the key to any successful event. If you wait too long there is always the possibility of not finding the item you are looking for.

Take your time. Most makeup kits if purchased from a store contain only enough contents to create the one desired effect. If you hurry the process and don't read the instructions you could find yourself having to go without or even worse having to purchase another. There is nothing quite as spooky as a vampire with only one fang!

When you decide it's time to get ready, figure out if it's best to put your costume on first or wait until you have put on your makeup. If you can easily put on your costume without disturbing your makeup or getting it on your costume, do your makeup first. If your costume is difficult to put on place a towel around your neck to avoid drips and spills.

Pull back your hair. This will keep your hair from disturbing your makeup and give you a clearer view of your face.

Think first. Grab a mirror and plan where you want to apply your makeup. This could possibly help prevent frustrating mistakes and possibly give you better ideas. Avoid placing makeup near the eyes.

As regards what you personally will wear on Halloween this year, you must think of the practicalities. You could always dress up as a ghost with a sheet draped over yourself and this may be quite amusing but think of wearing this for a long period of time and it seems less of a good idea. To plan a Halloween party, start by listing 25 things that first come to mind that remind you of Halloween. This will help you to determine your decoration theme. Next, decide how much you are able or willing to spend. I will share my choices with you and I warn you, I am a cheapskate. In addition, anything that I can have shipped to me is a plus. Who wants to go out and spend 45 minutes in the decorations store if you are short on time?

When you have plenty of time though, do go out and browse for things if you need Halloween party supplies or decorations. For me, I use what I have. Candy dishes, lights, nic-nacs, food serving dishes and trays and anything that may be orange, black or any other appropriate color as far as my linens go. I have a black sheet (not used as a bed sheet) as a table cloth to a lace table covering to give the illusion of a spider web.

You will also want to do the obvious when planning your Halloween party successfully:

Create your guest list, choose the date and time, select the place, plan the menu, make lists for shopping and To Do. Give yourself plenty of time for any shopping excursions -- you will have more fun if you are not rushing. In case you do not have time to hit the library, use the internet as a resource for recipes and theme ideas too. Other than final details such as decorating and food preparation, this is about all there is to planning a Halloween party.

Here is my list of 25 things that first come to mind when I think of Halloween:

Pumpkins, costumes, music, candy corn, fall, trick or treat, black cats, bats, witches, skeletons, mummies, jack o'lanterns, haunted houses that you go through to be frightened or amused, haunted houses that show up in Scooby-Doo episodes, spiders, spider webs, cauldrons, Boo Berry, Count Chocula and Frakenberry.

So with this list, I will begin to plan my Halloween party for this year. For example, how can I work the cereals I listed into my theme? One thing I could do is to search the internet for a recipe that includes those cereals to offer to my guests as snacks. If one can't be found, I am sure we can make a cereal bar from those using a popular cereal bar recipe. You may be the type of person to buy the ready-made cereal treats. You could always offer those in colored, festive Halloween foils. The key is to do what fits you best when planning your Halloween party.

Some items to look for around your home are table cloths, napkins, plates, glasses and silverware. Even though you will have to wash them, you are not only saving money but being kind to the environment. Unless you are just starting up housekeeping, you most likely have some Halloween decorations, old costumes and the likes. Pull out everything you have, and you will be surprised to see what you can use to inspire your party. Be creative, have fun and you and your guests will have a great time this Halloween!
